There's often an overbearing societal pressure to buckle down and concentrate, but how's that possible, when your ADD addled brain can't even make it to the end of...you're not even reading this, are you? For a company that can relate to your never-ending lack of focus, check out Copy Collection.

Copy's an OC-based tops-and-bottoms line from a former Perry Ellis/Gotcha guy, who claims a pervasive vintage 90s influence on his mostly limited-edition gear, but in reality, the stuff's so charmingly unfocused that...man, hot dogs make great lunches. Enzyme-washed, super-soft tees are resolutely all over the map, with everything from a simple, thick-striped v-neck, to a digitally printed greyscale moonscape (also available in a hippied-out splash of color), to a face composed of two different eyes, a mouth made of rectangles, and a plus-sign nose -- clearly waiting till it's 18 to get an operation for a greater-than. Other gear's equally rando: a pocketed, plaid button up, a slew of colorful tank tops, and an all-black short-sleeve hoodie, for making all your robberies armed ones.

The new drop's also got Copy's first couple pairs of jeans, one a fairly straight-forward five-pocket affair, the other with extra zippers at the hip, because no matter how ADD a man is, he's always able to buckle down and concentrate on one thing -- facilitating people getting into his pants.

Step into the new By Robert James boutique and you can cross all of the men off of your holiday shopping list. Though the store is on the small side at 300 square-feet, it packs in a strong assortment of sharp-looking blazers, knit shirts, jeans, buttondowns, graphic tees, vests and jackets. And Robert James, the store's owner and designer, definitely kills it when it comes to outerwear. Coats are one-of-a-kind (and can be custom-made), incorporating different leathers, fabrics, and hardware detailing on each. The look is clean and well-tailored, but comfortable, too. When designing his jackets, James often uses silhouettes or popular plaids from his previous work as inspiration. The result is an integrated collection of meticulously-crafted coats that reflects a vision distinctly his own.

Aside from his eponymous line, James also carries knits and wovens by Cali-based brand Copy and some amazing new old-stock that includes wool coats from the '60s (unworn, with the pockets still stitched!). There's a hodge-podge of accessories, such as vintage ties and unisex Japanese and Italian sunnies. Men's and women's hats, jewelry, and some odd collectibles like vintage zip lighters round out the assortment... and are all great stocking stuffers!

The vibe of the shop is super-cool, but definitely not cold -– James and crew take pride in cultivating a sense of community. Whether it's working with local manufacturers and materials or offering a range of price points that starts at $20 for a kickass graphic tee, their M.O. is inclusive.

If you're a fashion innovator or pacesetter of any artistic sort, then Copy Collection is made with you in mind. We're not talking everyday t-shirts and sneakers folks. Instead, think streetwear made with a pulse, a full sequence of rhythm and groove. A thin line between streetwear and menswear best describes Copy as it serves up an upscale, non-traditional line of streetwear style. Wondering who the architect is behind these original designs? Murphy Martines, founder and creative director, tells us about Copy's origins, his "rave days" selling his goods to record stores and becoming a current day fashion mainstay.

Grooveeffect: I am a true believer that the foundation of success usually starts out in a basement, attic, or possibly some dinky apartment. Maybe with a $40 dollar sewing machine, perhaps a sole pen and paper, or just a dream as you work minimum wage for "the man." Considering that, my first question is always:

Tell me about the roots of Copy. How exactly did it get created?

Murphy: I've been making things for a long time under the name Copy, since around 98. In college I would sew up full cut and sew collections for myself. People couldn't believe that I made them. I sold T's, Dino Hoodies, and plastic earrings back in the rave days to record stores.

Grooveeffect: So you started out in a college dorm room. You probably had a different idea of what success meant to you then. Describe your version of success now and tell us what you are trying to accomplish with Copy?

Murphy: I just want to have freedom and independence in my life, Copy is my vehicle for this path. I have been an artist and designer all my life, fashion is now my canvas for my ideas. Success for me is to be able to create and maintain a balanced life with my friends and family and Copy.

Grooveeffect: Copy does not fit neatly into one particular type of fashion genre. It does though reflect streetwear in a new sense of the word. With so many streetwear labels making headway in the past few years what sets Copy apart from the rest of em'?

Murphy: Details, thought, expression and execution.

Grooveeffect: Okay, with that in mind, as you are gearing up your creative forces, in your imagination, who is wearing Copy?

Murphy: The guy who is looking for something that represents who he is. This guy is a connector who influences others. He understands and appreciates fashion, art, music and culture.

Grooveeffect: It looks like your spring collection was ready to view sooner then most other labels. Are you going to make a habit of this or were fans just lucky this season?

Murphy: Good question. I am pretty open with everyone with what I am working on and doing. So I have been posting my work when I am done with it. Basically after the season is up I am moving on to the next thing.

Grooveeffect: I am sure your fans appreciate knowing what is up and coming to align with their trendsetting behaviors.

Murphy: For the fall season, I am holding it back a little timing wise. I get worried that I am showing my cards to soon. But at the same time I like to be ahead of the game.

Grooveeffect: Yes, from the perspective of a business I can understand how those kinds of decisions can make a big impact. But do tell what we can expect from Copy this fall?

Murphy: More Progressive silhouettes, better fabrications, new categories and really expensive t-shirts.

Grooveeffect: Thanks for the insight and we'll look forward to future collections!

Jeune Kemar (21:07:25): so can you tell me a little about you ? your studies ? what did you do before copy ?
murphymartines (21:15:41): I went to CCAC in SanFrancisco and studied industrial design. I got into using plexi glass on projects and started using it as a medium for jewelery and wearable art. I started to sell to some stores in LA and got into some major retailer with the line that was around 2000. I was doing the plexi jewelery thing and some tshirts that where more music driven. That was the start of COPY. I took a full time position at GAT jeans which is now Green Apple Tree. I actually design the first GRNAPPLETREE line back then. THen I moved on and did a street/urban line called 33 degrees and then some more mainstream collections like Pony, Joeboxer, Caffeine, Mongoose, JohnnyBlaze, and Drifter. I lived in LA for a couple years and then moved to NY and BAck to the West Coast where I am now. Most recently I was the creative director for Perry Ellis I managed the Action Sports Division (Redsand, Gotcha, and MCD) it was about 12 million dollars of business.
Jeune Kemar (21:17:39): ok, its quite unusual, you began in industrial design and now you work in "fashion"
why this change?

murphymartines (21:18:26): I was more drawn to fashion, it's not so serious
Jeune Kemar (21:19:27): Are you the only person who is running the brand? Why “Copy”? When I look at your catalog, I don't feel like you are copying
murphymartines (21:29:50): I am the main person behind the brand. My fiance is the person behind the scenes that I bounce most ideas off of. She is the director of Volcom and is really talented so she is my check and balance system. Most recently I added a marketing director Rama Mayo and a sales person Casper Adams. Rama is really helping me spread the word, he has an amazing reputation in the music industry and now wants to tackle the fashion industry. He is really talented guy and has already brought a lot to the table. He runs the tradeshow United where I am previewing the collection every season. I have a few other homey's that help with product development and business management that keep me organize. Without them I would loose it.
Jeune Kemar (21:32:58): so no one is a newcomer? you are really in known world
why did you feel that outsource the marketing will help the brand? it's really rare among the indie clothing company

murphymartines (21:33:43): oh yeah why COPY Well it a spoof on the industry. It relates to graphic design(copy-paste) as well as music production. Every garment is a copy of the original. On top of that I try never to copy what others are doing. In all my work i try to keep it original. Let other COPY if they must.
Jeune Kemar (21:34:06): ahah

murphymartines (21:38:36): I am not that great at marketing my self, I can sell a clothing line to a store but as far as a passion for marketing, I prefer to focus on design and making clothes. I am kinda of a clothing nerd. Rama is a marketing expert he understands how to create that word of mouth buzz that all the money in the world can't buy.
Jeune Kemar (21:41:09): You told me that you are thinking to launch your brand in Europe, do you already figure it out?Who will handle the marketing, because I imagine that it will be quite hard for Rama to travel to Europe or whatever

murphymartines (21:45:13): I am planning on doing the Ideal show in Berlin to start off with this summer. Hopefully I can land some key accounts from that show and take it from there.
Jeune Kemar (21:46:14): not the bread&butter in Barcelona? maybe the most known in Europe I think

murphymartines (21:48:25): Maybe, it's definately not out of the question.
Jeune Kemar (21:49:00): How do you describe your brand? What are your influences? When I check out your clothes it feels that you are really influenced by 80's California but not in the way that American are more in a way that Scandinavian are. I'm not sure you understand what I mean. You are, imo, against the current of the actual American trends
murphymartines (22:00:32): I feel like COPY is more of a sophisticated design driven streetwear brand. I am influence by my travels. Most recently I was in Berlin and before that I was in HongKong and Japan. I take it all in and mix it up and put it out and see what people like. Since I live the California lifestyle my environment always affects my design. But at the same time I love european design aesthetics and feel like I was born in the wrong country.
Jeune Kemar (22:01:47): What do you like in european design? According to you what are the differences between this one and the american one?
murphymartines (22:09:53): The actual knowledge of garment construction and fabrication, the use of different silhouettes, forward styling and they look at the collection more conceptually. The Famous american designer are more business men than designer excluding a few like John Varvatos and Marc Jacobs who I admire. My favorite designer are Hussein Chalayan, Henrik Viskov, and Walter van Beirendonck to give you an example of who I look up too.
Jeune Kemar (22:11:40): ok when we are talking about design, have you seen the Paul Mittleman' comment about design school, that, in his opinion, only teach "design thinking" in our days
Jeune Kemar (22:11:57): what you think about that?
murphymartines (22:14:59): I am not sure if you can teach design. You either got it or you don't. The only thing school can teach you is how to communicate your ideas.
Jeune Kemar (22:17:40): okay, to come back about your brand, you are really different from many brands in the fact that you are truly creating clothes, and not only put a graphics on a t-shirt or a sweater and you really prepare your next season line whereas many brands are just introducing the s/s collection. you seem to be more into creating clothes than find a graphic and put it on a tee

murphymartines (22:19:19): I just believe in having a balance and creating something that has and identity and point of view.
Jeune Kemar (22:21:10): I have seen on your website that you are launching a blog, how will it be used? in a personal way,promotion way or both?
murphymartines (22:27:21): Both, I am not sure what direction am going to take it. It will be a journey.

Copy Fall 07 Preview

Fall 2007 marks the third season for COPY (www.copycollection.com) and the collection is getting much more attention than ever before. Until recently, COPY designer Murphy Martines was the creative director for a billion dollar fashion conglomerate, designing and managing over 400 pieces per year at the age of 28. Murphy says: "Working within the corporate structure of an apparel giant I enabled me to travel extensively around the globe meeting with sources in all regions of the
world including South America, India and Asia. I visited the factories and saw first hand the manufacturing process, fabric development and how finishes are created and applied to garments. The education I received is essential and now ALL my resources are focused on COPY. Im so glad that I got in and out while I was still young and didn't come out jaded at the end."

When asked what was different this season for COPY, Murphy says: "The blazer hoody is the surprise hit of this season. We made clean denim for the first time which stores are embracing as well. The plaid/stripe combination shorts are key, hooded button ups & a double woven shirt sewn into one piece sets the collection apart from other brands."

When we saw the brand live we were most impressed by the interesting cuts on their collection. They did a great job mixing different styles of clothing, such as combining the cardigan and the hoodie into one piece.

COPY has just released their Fall 2007 look book online at www.copycollection.com and the collection will hit the shelves of Unsteady, True, Ikon & Bodega mid July.
